Industry Interview, Photographer Nicole L. Hill

by Katie May on October 21, 2011

Let me tell you a little something about this fabulous human being, Nicole L. Hill.  First, she’s young (running trend it seems). Second, she’s CRAZY talented (again, a running trend).  Lastly, she’s SO down to earth and SO cool!!!  To reiterate–if you don’t like her, YOU obvs have a problem (and potentially no soul)  ;)

After nailing, seeeeeeeriously NAILING, our Spring 2012 lookbook shoot (see shots below) I knew I had to sit her down and pick her damn big brain (and heart). Enjoy!  xx

mandy1katynadja      ME:  FAVORITE ON THE JOB MEMORY/EXPERIENCE?

HER:  I don’t think I have a favorite memory but a few weeks back my team and I were shooting on location at some sand dunes.  Once we arrived to our location, which was three hours away, we come to find out that the road had collapsed due to some rain. It turns out that the hike to our actual shooting spot was about four miles away, through the sand. Insanely enough this did not stop us, we gathered up the gear and maned the four mile hike like champions. It just made me so feel so incredibly blessed to be surrounded by such good spirited people. I mean, we carried bags and bags of clothes, shoes, camera gear and lighting equipment, it wasn’t easy and it wasn’t glamourous. It’s not everyday that you’re surrounded by happy people who appreciate what their doing and keep trucking with a smile. It’s just a really good memory in my mind.

ME:  ICE CREAM OR FroYO?

HER:  Rainbow Sherbet all the way!

ME:  WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU MOST?

HER:  Nature, my beautiful parents, god, love, positive energy.

ME:  WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS A GREAT FIRST CAMERA/LENS FOR AMATEURS OUT THERE WANTING TO START?

HER:  Any DSLR camera. Don’t worry about getting something thats expensive or professional grade, buy something you can afford and just explore. Explore ways of looking at light, capturing moments, playing with angles, viewing your subject. Have fun, get weird and see what happens.

ME:  WHAT WOULD BE YOUR LAST MEAL?

HER:  A mexican feast of all sorts & a huge glass of green tea.

ME:  THREE VICES?

HER:  Buying my dog too many squeak toys, drinking excessive amounts of green tea and reading when I really should be getting work done.

ME:  DREAM PERSON TO WORK WITH (besides me obvi;) ?

HER:  I am dying to shoot for Free People and Wildfox, they both are just too amazing for words. When that days comes I’ll be a happy camper.

ME:  IF YOU COULD BE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW, WHERE WOULD YOU BE AND WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?

HER:  Floating on a raft in the ocean on a tropical island, listening to the wind in the trees.

ME:  WHAT IS YOUR GOAL WITH THE IMAGES YOU CAPTURE?

HER:  I really want to inspire people to find beauty, that hard to get kind. The kind that comes from within… strength, courage, dignity. I mean, all the woman I photograph are ridiculously gorgeous, but I want my subjects and stories to have something more, something deeper.

ME:  BEST ADVICE ANYONE HAS EVER GIVEN YOU?

HER:  Trust in god and always stay present.

ME:  WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE PHOTOGRAPHER?

HER:  How can I answer that… Well, if Annie Leibovitz, Sebastian Kim, Greg Kadel, Camilla Akrans, Ellen Von Unwerth, Guy Aroch and Jamie Nelson transformed into one person, that person would be my favorite photographer. Haha, there are too many amazing photographers out there to pick one!

ME:  ONE WISH FOR THE WORLD?

HER:  For more people to believe in themselves and follow their passions.

ME:  FAVORITE KATIE MAY PIECE FROM THE SPRING SHOOT?

HER:  The Kristine, obsessed!!!

MG 1369

Enough drooling!!!  Lets get to the interview icon smile

ME: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN MODELING?

HER:  6 years ago I was a normal thirteen year old kid at the beach with my friends when a scout from Ford approached me and handed me her card. The rest is history!

ME:  WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MODELING EXPERIENCE/MEMORY?

HER:  It’s almost impossible to choose, but I would say the time I spent living in London. I met so many amazing people and fell in love with the city.

ME:  IF YOU COULD BE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW, WHERE WOULD YOU BE AND WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING (besides being beautiful, obvi icon smile ?

HER:  I would be lying on the beach in my mom’s native country, Nicaragua, surrounded by family and friends and food!

ME:  WHAT’S PLAYING ON YOUR iPOD RIGHT NOW?

HER:  Normally anything that’s rock n roll! Currently I’m in the mood for folk so right now it’s Fleet Foxes and Simon and Garfunkel.

ME:  FAVORITE INDULGENCE?

HER:  Every kind of food that’s considered bad for you icon smile

ME:  WHAT CAN’T YOU LIVE WITHOUT?

HER:  Music! It makes my world go round.

ME:  TELL ME SOMETHING TOTALLY RANDOM ABOUT YOU.

HER:  I’m a HUGE nerd at heart! I love the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings series.

ME:  WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FEATURE ON YOUR FACE?

HER:  My eyebrows! I endured a lot of teasing in grade school because of them, now I know it is part of what makes me unique.

ME:  BEST ADVICE ANYONE HAS EVER GIVEN YOU?

HER:  Generally any advice my parents have given me is pretty solid.

ME:  TELL US A BEAUTY SECRET YOU’VE LEARNED WHILE MODELING.

HER:  Aquaphor is fantastic for moisturizing and smoothing–I put some on my eyes before bed AND you can get it at any drugstore.

ME:  CHOCOLATE OR VANILLA?

HER:  Chocolate of course!

ME:  THREE VICES.

HER:  That’s an impossible question to answer! I have a million vices haha

ME:  ANY ADVICE FOR THE YOUNG LADIES WANTING TO GET INTO THE INDUSTRY?

HER:  Always remember to treat modeling like a job, not a lifestyle. I believe that is the key to having a long and successful career.

ME:  WHAT WOULD BE YOUR LAST MEAL?

HER:  Definitely gallo pinto, a dish common in Nicaragua. My mom makes it the best, it’s comfort food at its finest. This would have to be accompanied by an ice cold beer and followed by some amazing dessert!

ME:  IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE WISH FOR THE WORLD, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

HER:  Health and happiness for my loved ones!

ME:  FAVORITE KATIE MAY PIECE FROM THE SHOOT?

HER:  I reallllllly fell in love with the gorgeous purple dress from the first shot!  *see picture at top of post*

Spring 2012 Design Inspiration

by Katie May on July 24, 2011

Hey folks.  I’m in Los Angeles working my tail off on our gorgeous spring 2012 collection–CANNOT WAIT to show you all.

I wanted to share all that has inspired me for this upcoming season’s designs.  Hope you are all loving what you see!!  xx

29m

Stella McCartney is incredible! Love the look on the pant–very relaxed, very sophisticated!

038621e6d04ba80e4fdc06e4eb61b91b

The drape and flowiness of this Ungaro dress does something to me–look at that movement–it’s beautiful!  I designed a dress that was inspired off this look–I picture myself running through the streets of Tokyo heading to a fabulous party with the dress flowing similarly to the picture above *sigh* ! Fingers crossed it turns out as beautiful.
041092 Hydrangea bigleaf ld

The hydrangeas in Tokyo are STUNNING!!  I know they are known for their sakura (cherry blossoms as us white folk like to call it), but their hydrangeas are equally extraordinary!  AND they are literally growing all over the country–it’s a sight to see most definitely!!  The blue colors you see in the plants are incredible–I had to use this color for spring!bone

I have this old vintage antler in our apartment as our dining room table centerpiece!  The bone color is beautiful and the texture is incredible.  We mimic’d the look/feel with our chiffon.
photo

The soft petal pink color of the peonies and the layers of lace/chiffon are equally are delicate and feminine.  Another inspiration for our spring collection.window

Took this picture one afternoon on a particularly windy day in Tokyo–the movement and sheerness seen with the drape’s material inspired the whole “look” for our spring collection–you’ll get it when you see it!

And lastly, my new home, Japan, inspires me–The beauty of the people, countryside, and culture–really inspiring place to live and design.  Thank you Conor for the fabulous adventure!  xx

I am ALWAYS that creepy designer poking through the makeup artist’s bag checking out what products they REALLY use when working at shoots.  Luckily for me, our Holiday lookbook makeup artist, Christina Henry, was really cool (and talented–obvs) and took the time to share some of her treasured beauty secrets!!  Take notes people – her impressive resume includes painting the mugs of some of the biggest names in Hollywood (or the world for that matter): Fergie from The Black Eyed Peas, the Kardashian sisters, Brittany Snow, Estelle, and Lady Gaga!!  Before we start the Q & A, check out some of her work from our shoot!

Kicking it off with a cat lined eye, peach glossy lips, and a flawless/glowy complexion.

katieMay060211 lookbook shot5 0032

Layering on a bit more color, Christina added a wonderful apricot hue to the lips, beefed up the eye makeup with some neutral browns, and kept that gorgeous glow!!

katieMay060211 lookbook shot9 4867Smokin’ hot with that smokey eye!!  Love how she added a soft pink hue to the lips, defined the checks and added that gorgeous pink flush, all to compliment that foxy smoked eye!!  PERFECTION!!

ME:  WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

HER:  I’m from London.

ME:  HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A MAKEUP ARTIST?

HER:  God, I feel old saying this, but over a decade.

ME:  WHAT ARE THREE ESSENTIAL PRODUCTS EVERY GIRL/BOY NEEDS?

HER:  Great skincare….I’m talking about a killer moisturizer and primer (she likes Laura Mercier).  Also an amazing bronzer–my favorite is Orlane Paris, and the best mascara on earth–L’oreal Volumnious in Carbon Black.  NECESSITIES PEOPLE!!!

ME:  WHAT IS A PET PEEVE WITH YOUR JOB?

HER:  Poor Hygiene (brushes, models, makeup containers)

ME:  FAVORITE OMG MOMENT WHILE WORKING?

HER:  Working with Lady Gaga.

ME:  WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?

HER:  I LOVE what I do–it’s my own artistry!  Everyday is an utterly new experience.

ME:  ANY RULES THAT YOU ABIDE BY WHEN WORKING?

HER:  The only rule I have is that there are NO rules!

ME:  BEST BEAUTY SECRET?

HER:  Drink lots of water–I swear it really works.

To keep track of Christina, make sure to follow her on twitter!  xx

Industry Interview, Model Saskia

by Katie May on June 26, 2011

Okay let’s state the obvious–our Holiday lookbook model is GORGEOUS!!  This native Californian was born for the camera!!  Since I have a slight fascination with gorgeous female models, I had to sit down with her and pick her brain in hopes of divulging her secrets on how to look……well, like her icon smile

katieMay060211 lookbook shot2 0072

Let’s get the dish….pronto!

ME:  WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN MODELING?

HER:  Hella Nor Cal (**ME: two things that popped in my head, 1. WTF did she just say?!?, 2. how are you NOT from Russia?!?**)–I’ve been modeling on and off for 10 years

ME:  WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE “OMG” MOMENT YOU’VE EXPERIENCED WHILE WORKING?

HER:  I did a shoot with a baby monkey!  It was amazing–I’m SUCH an animal lover and having a day to shoot with such an adorable creature was just short of perfection.

ME:  WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT MODELING?

HER:  Every day is different than the last.  Working with new faces, new clothing, new places….it’s ALWAYS interesting.

ME:  WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MISUNDERSTANDING ABOUT MODELS OR MODELING?

HER:  That modeling is “easy” !!  I was in Paris in the middle of summer shooting Fall.  I was wearing cashmere, wool, and was covered head to toe in layers while it was 110 degrees out.  Not to mention that my shoes were 3 sizes too small…..I worked a ten hour day without a break running around in the heat…..now, how on earth is that easy?!?

ME:  WHAT DO YOU DO FOR YOUR FIGURE?

HER:  Since I travel often with work, it’s difficult to have a consistent workout regimen.  I have little things that I do…….like, I ALWAYS park in the furthest parking space, I ALWAYS take the stairs–BUT when I can workout I love yoga.

ME: WHAT’S YOUR DIET LIKE?

HER:  I eat really healthy and I eat frequently–about 5-6 times a day.  Smaller portions and healthy snacks are key as well as drinking loads of water.

ME:  WHAT IS THE BEST BEAUTY TIP YOU’VE RECEIVED?

HER:  To drink lots of water, always snack to keep your metabolism going, and take vitamins.

ME:  ANY WORDS OF ADVICE TO OTHER MODELS?

HER:  Keep yourself grounded and remember it’s a job–laugh off the small stuff–that’s really important for your self esteem.

Thanks Saskia!!  xx
